研究概要／Summary

われわれ哺乳類の成体の心筋は増殖能をほとんど持たず，心臓には心筋梗塞などで障害を受けた後の再生能力がありません． しかし胎児や生後すぐの新生児では心筋は増殖能を保っており，心臓には再生能力があることが分かっています．心筋が生後まもなく増殖能を失う主な原因のひとつは，急激に増加するミトコンドリア好気呼吸により発生する酸化ストレスにあります．そこで，レドックス制御や酸化ストレスが心筋の細胞増殖に与える影響を明らかにし，成体の心筋に増殖能を再び持たせることを目指した研究を行っています．

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. The pathophysiological basis of systolic heart failure is the inability of the adult heart to regenerate damaged myocardium. Cardiomyocyte proliferation is a major mediator of mammalian heart regeneration in neonates and myocardial turnover in adults. However, little is known about mechanisms regulating cardiomyocyte cell cycle. We have recently shown that a rapid increase in mitochondrial respiration and in oxidative stress induce cell cycle arrest in neonatal cardiomyocytes. My research interest is focused on how redox signaling and oxidative stress regulate cardiomyocyte cell cycle and the endogenous regenerative capacity of the adult mammalian heart.
