Promoting interdisciplinary and international research rooted in humanities and social sciences field

Wang Qianran

Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences

As a URA at the University of Tsukuba, I would like to focus on promoting interdisciplinary research, international joint/collaborative research, and international dissemination of research results in humanities and social sciences field.

What kind of career have you passed through so far?

Studied and became a researcher in Japan
I had a chance to study as an exchange student at Kanazawa University in Japan during my university years. Because of this experience, after graduating from a university in China, I went on to graduate school at Nagoya University. At Nagoya University, I majored in social education and lifelong learning in the field of education, and  conducted research on older adults’ learning activities taking place in local communities in an aging society. I earned a master's degree and a Ph. D in education. In addition to my own major, I was selected as a scholarship recipient of the Wellbeing in Asia Women Leaders Program, a leading graduate program of MEXT, during the master's and doctoral courses. Through this program, I had the opportunity to formulate a project together with graduate students from other graduate schools and conduct field research in Indonesia and Thailand to investigate the local gender situation. I also had the opportunity to visit the United Nations headquarters in the United States and UN-related organizations. There I was able to hear about how people from diverse backgrounds work together to tackle various issues occurring in the world. Since no one in my field earns a Ph. D in three years, I began working as a specially appointed assistant professor in an inter-disciplinary special education program called "Nitobe College" at Hokkaido University while writing my doctoral dissertation in the fourth year of my doctoral course. During my work as a specially appointed assistant professor, I taught classes to students from different research backgrounds and multinationals, and often worked in collaboration with professors from different faculties. Regarding research activities, I have conducted individual research as well as collaborative research with researchers in different fields. I have actively participated in international conferences and have worked as a member of the executive committee of international conferences.

With the limited number of research positions available at universities, I learned of the existence of the URA profession, where I could make use of my experience as a researcher. I decided to become a URA in the faculty of humanities and social sciences, hoping to contribute to the promotion of interdisciplinary/ international research by utilizing my knowledge and experience as a researcher.

What are important things/values/significance/ in your work?

I value the importance of using a logic-based approach to work efficiently.
On top of that, in my work as a URA, I try to provide support that meets the needs of individual researchers.

What are your future goals and prospects?

Promoting interdisciplinary research, international joint/collaborative research, and international dissemination of research results in humanities and social sciences field
My previous research and work experiences have allowed me to interact with researchers outside my own field of specialization, especially researchers from scientific fields with whom I have little or no regular contact. I have realized learned that research in scientific fields is conducted under a completely different system than in humanities and social science fields. I also realized that when solving certain social problems, approaches from different fields are required. When conducting research, it is very important to interact with researchers from different fields. Furthermore, when working with overseas researchers, I realized that researches in humanities and social sciences field in Japan, including my field of study in education, is confined to Japan and lacks and need to be more creative in terms of sending information overseas. As a URA at the University of Tsukuba, I would like to focus on promoting interdisciplinary research, international joint/collaborative research, and international dissemination of research results in humanities and social sciences field.
