The University of Tsukuba Research Administration/Management Office

Let's build an environment and a soil for producing attractive academic and research results together with everyone

ITO, Shoyu

Center for Artificial Intelligence Research

In society and business activities, the superiority or inferiority of things is often evaluated by quality, cost, and delivery (QCD). Without exception, university activities can be compared using this index as a mirror.

・The innovation sought by faculty and researchers (Q)

・The costs and deadlines managed by staff (CD)

As we can see from the above, each of us, including faculty, researchers, and staff, is leading in our area and mastering the optimal process. In addition, I believe that one of the significant roles of URA should be providing the best QCD performance comprehensively for university activities (including education and venture creation).

What kind of career have you passed through so far?

Through research and development, manufacturing, sales expansion, maintenance, and completion, while experiencing the life cycle of products, I have formed and evolved values that think from Point to Area, and from focused process to Purpose-Centric, and like this I have walked the path of an obscure life.
Ø After completing the Master's Course of graduate school at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, I began to work on magneto-optical disks, the most advanced high-density recording medium at the time.

Ø In order to accelerate this research, I visited Japan as a visiting scholar at Nagoya University and conducted basic research. A year later, I entered the doctoral program at Nagoya University Graduate School, systematically studying magneto-optical theory and conducting applied research as a recording medium. After graduating, I worked as an assistant at the university, conducting research and student guidance.

Ø Because of exploring what lies beyond the basic research of magneto-optical disks and magnetic disks, I changed my job to Fujitsu Laboratories, and from there, for the practical application of disks, product research and development, mass production of factories, contract production of OEM (partial ODM), marketing, sales, maintenance, finally, I experienced a series of processes over several years until the end of the product itself. I was able to understand very well that products have a life cycle, just like

our own life.

Ø Taking advantage of this experience, I engaged in consulting (called field innovation) in the company for nearly three years. We consulted on production efficiency, reduction of clerical waste, reform of people's awareness, management strategy, etc.

Ø While the effectiveness of the consulting method is recognized in the company, I was placed in a new overseas business. By engaging in the system field, I learned the essential art of utilizing intellectual property and was able to put into practice how to exercise rights to the fullest. Trusted by overseas partners and customers, I have built a win-win environment with them.

Ø Although I felt like I had settled down for a while, I felt that I could implement the results of my university education and research in society, so I changed my mind to a URA job at the University of Tsukuba.

What are important things/values/significance/ in your work?

Logical thinking and goal-oriented
It is to look ahead (vision), solidify the process (process), and push forward with fun and tenacity starting from the present (Status Quo).

What are your future goals and prospects?

Obsession with delivering the highest QCD performance of activity
The goal of the Artificial Intelligence Science Center is to use AI technology to create continuous innovation from a global perspective, to be at the forefront of solving social issues, to take the lead, and to develop an environment for producing venture companies.

Therefore, we will focus on goods, money, and person, and focus on the following points.

① Making the Artificial Intelligence Science Center's core technology more known to the public The Artificial Intelligence Science Center will become a hub that attracts industry and overseas peers like a magnet

② To be able to obtain funds not only from domestic companies but also from

overseas funds

③ In addition, we will form core intellectual property (patents, etc.) that will be the heart of future industry from basic research and support the process of acquiring intellectual property rights.

④ We will promote international cooperation based on intellectual property.

⑤ Furthermore, by supporting the process of commercialization and commercialization of core technologies, we will support the production of venture entrepreneurs.

As mentioned above, I would like to support and contribute to the development and growth of researchers who can play an active role in the world while performing daily tasks.

When I came to Japan first time, I was impressed by the social atmosphere of Japan, which was full of Eastern thought and manners (Confucianism, Taoism, etc.), although being an advanced capitalismt.

I had a hard time with my parents’ teaching in my childhood because it was not easily accepted outside the home. Because of this, I was unhappy with their values, but when I came to Japan, I realized that the courtesy and other things they taught me were correct and became grateful for them.
