The University of Tsukuba Research Administration/Management Office

ITO, Kishiko

Institute of Library, Information and Media Science

I aim to create the best possible environment for research to "explore the unknown" and "make the impossible possible”. In addition, as well as researchers who have a firm will and mission, I will work with researchers who are "just love research!” to open up a path.

What kind of career have you passed through so far?

I developed my experience as a corporate R&D worker to become a URA.
In the development or research department of a global cooperate, I was involved in the development of network devices that support the connection between people, and in the research and development of notebook PCs that allow people to create from any location. I worked with engineers both inside and outside the company to achieve power saving, robust security, and weight reduction. I was in charge of development project manager of notebook PC systems, also certified as a PMP®. After that, I decided to become a URA to help open up the future with the power of science.

When I became a URA from a researcher at the global cooperate, I was astonished at the lack of research funding at universities. Not only is it inadequate for research activities and the research environment, but it will also greatly affect the future of all people if it continues. Therefore, in order to effectively communicate the value of our research, I am actively involved in supporting applications for external funding by formulating measures based on surveys and reflecting them in the preparation of research plan documents.

What are important things/values/significance/ in your work?

Communication that is close to each individual
I place the utmost importance on the intentions, intentions and motivations of the researchers. It is natural that I do not say or do anything that I do not like, but the level of dislike also depends on the person, so I try to take their standards into consideration. When I make suggestions to researchers, some ask for positive comments while others ask for the bare minimum, so I am conscious of communicating in a way that is close to each individual.

I am also in charge of coordinating Tsukuba Conferences and TGSWs as part of my duties. When researchers need to make a decision in response to a request from the committee, I categorize the issues and explain the options using tables and figures to make it easier for the leaders to make a quick decision. In the preparation process as well, I work closely with the research support team to make sure that everything is in order. It is a relief for me to see the participants with smiling faces in the photos after a successful event.

What are your future goals and prospects?

Improving the adoption rate and contributing to the development of joint research
My job is to improve the adoption rate of external funding and to increase opportunities for joint research with companies.

The ideas and points of view of researchers are always interesting and helping them to communicate the significance and value of their research is a very rewarding job. I prepare a model schedule for each researcher who wish to apply, provide clear comments on the format and content, and try to strike a balance between quality and schedule. We would like to further improve the accuracy of our support and contribute to improving the adoption rate by accurately grasping the requirements for public applications and presenting countermeasure plans.

With regard to joint research, I try to understand the seeds and widen my antennae to detect needs related to the research area of the department in charge.
